Economic volatility strongly influences how firms apply accounting policies and report financial performance. Periods of instability affect profits and key financial indicators, reducing predictability and increasing uncertainty in financial reporting. In this context, accounting policies serve not only as technical tools but also as strategic mechanisms for reflecting economic reality and managing risk. This paper relies on a review of prior research on the relationship between economic volatility, managerial decisionmaking, and accounting policy choices. It examines how firms respond to unstable market conditions and how uncertainty affects the timing and scope of accounting adjustments. The evidence shows that both macroeconomic conditions and managerial decisions drive variations in financial results. During periods of high volatility, firms often adopt a cautious “wait-and-see” approach, delaying accounting changes to reduce risk exposure. Managers also tend to prioritize current assets over liabilities and incorporate uncertainty estimates into their decisions. In addition, high volatility reduces the comparability of financial reports. Under fair value accounting, adjustments based on current market prices further amplify the effects of economic instability on reported performance. These findings highlight the strategic role of accounting policies in risk management and performance reporting. Flexible accounting policies help firms adapt to changing market conditions and preserve a clearer picture of financial performance. However, greater volatility can weaken consistency and comparability across reports. Therefore, understanding the impact of economic volatility on accounting practices is essential for accurate performance evaluation and prudent financial decision-making.
