Abstract:
Asset impairment is an essential accounting process that ensures assets are not reported at values higher than their recoverable amount. This paper presents a comparative analysis of IAS 36 “Impairment of Assets” and the National Accounting Standard (NAS) “Impairment of Assets”, focusing on their similarities and differences in impairment testing, valuation, and recognition of losse. The study shows that, although both standards share the same objective, they differ in their approach. NAS applies a simplified method based on fair value less costs of disposal, while IAS 36 uses the concept of recoverable amount, including value in use. As a result, IAS 36 provides a more detailed and complex evaluation. Overall, NAS is aligned with IAS 36 but adapted to the national context, ensuring easier practical application.
