Abstract: One of the most important purposes of any insurance company is to be solvable, that is, to be able to honor its obligations. Considering the importance of solvency, insurance companies and supervisory authorities have developed several solvency systems over time, along with the development of insurance business. The new solvency system in insurance, called "Solvency II", offers a new vision of solvency, that have evolved from many other solvency systems used before. The objectives of this article is to inspect how the insurance have evolved from the oldest times until our days, the definition of solvency and how it has changed over time and to analyze the most important solvency systems over the world. Afterwards it focuses on solvency systems in Europe, analyzing the “Solvency I” system, that is still used in the Republic of Moldova, and study its advantages and disadvantages and why there was a need for a new solvency system called “Solvency II”. The last chapter is an introduction to “Solvency II” and investigates its main aspects and structure. JEL: G22, G28
