Abstract: A sustainable pension system must respect the principle of balance between generations and ensure the long-term financial stability. The unfavorable demographic forecasts for the next few years cast doubt on the possibilities of financing benefits from the social insurance system, especially the payments of old-age pensions, and jeopardizing the stability and credibility of the whole system: the small number of employed people will not cope with the large number of pensioners, which will increase in the coming years. This paper aims to analyze the current state of the public pension system in terms of coherent statistical indicators for periodically monitoring pension liabilities and assessing the medium and long-term risks that jeopardize the sustainability of the pension system in the Republic of Moldova.
