The agricultural sector of the Republic of Moldova is characterized by a deep dual structure determined by the existence of a large individual sector (family farms and households) and corporate farms. The duality and the strong fragmentation of agricultural land, has a negative influence on the competitiveness of the agricultural sector. The purpose of this research is to assess the level of development of the individual sector and its contribution to the development of the rural areas. The research includes the analysis of secondary data from National Bureau of Statistics and survey data collected from 938 farms from nine districts. Increasing the farm performance y improving their efficiency and competitiveness could be regarded as a solution for a better standard of living of rural families and developing rural areas.
