This paperwork tries to outline an overview of what self-assessmet is in the foreign language learning process, which is one of the main concerns of the ELP (European Language Portfolio), summarizing the consequences of this approach, based on benchmarks that can guide the work of teachers and students in order to focus on their needs and ensure autonomous, active, sustainable, quality learning, as well as the acquisition of relevant individual work skills for the professional activity. The focus is on developing the spirit of self-assessment with the help of methods, academic and individual study activities that involve reflective thinking and metacognition, imagination and creativity, involvement in projects, portfolios, case studies, problem solving/situations, etc. by identifying new, original solutions that reduce the lack of motivation and formalism of the participants in the didactic approach. Thus, the student becomes an active part, conscious in achieving the required tasks and achieving the set objectives in the qualitative self-assessment of the progress/results obtained and outlining his/her own academic path.
