dc.description.abstract The Bible consists of two main parts: the New and Old Testaments, in addition of being the most widespread book in the world, is also the most claimed source of historical information, including the evolution of the currency. It provides in a chronologically form the data on the existence of the currency for those periods of time, in form and content proper to the era. Here are testimonials about the value of coins, but also descriptions of several money transactions. The article addresses the names of the monetary units referred into the Bible. The names used during those reports to identify the money, are the most diverse, are in a relatively large number and show the real situation from that time and environment. The aspects exposed in the Bible come in argumentation with the evolutionary theory of the currency origin, and the names of the monetary units indicate currency functions, but first measure their value. Perhaps, precisely for these reasons, the respective mentions are made in the context of the moral behavior of the respective characters. JEL: E40 en_US
