dc.description.abstract Financial security after retirement is very important for both the individuals and the society, a lot of countries having to face the inevitable social, economic and financial effects of population ageing. One of the main reasons for this demographic change is the declining birth rate and the increasing life expectancy. Pensions are one of the most valuable functions of social security. They reduce the risk of extreme poverty at old age. They benefit everyone, either directly by paying out a pension after retirement, or indirectly by preventing excessive swings in national savings and borrowings. The issue is: how to make it sustainable and fair? This article aims to answer this question, analyzing the sustainability of the public pension system in the Republic of Moldova.
